PAL fencers give thanks, head to nationals

Local fencers had great success at a recent competition and thanks are being given to the Sparta Police Athletice League. The PAL building in Sparta is where the youth learned their skills.

The National Fencing Alliance (NFA) offers group fencing lessons on Wednesdays at the Police Atheltic League (PAL) building, which is located at 38 Station Rd. NFA Young saber and foil fencers boys and girls, age 9 to 15 learn and practice on Wednesdays under Maestro Trudnos, NFA Fencing Head Coach. The youth can later use their skills on a college level.

NFA saber graduate Cameron Flores will continue his Sparta fencing experience at Vassar College NY as a first-year student on the saber Men’s team. On Nov. 24, 2018 Allen Trudnos, NFA saber fencer and 8th grader at Pope John XXIII Middle School, competed at East Coast Super Regional Youth Fencing Tournament. The 148 best young fencers in the USA, from Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Washington DC and Canada competed at Youth 14 Men’s Saber. In the pool sessions fencers competed to 5 touches. Trudnos won 5 matches and lost only one bout, 3:5, to Denner Lysander, Connecticut the future Y14 Men’s Saber Champion.

After pools, young fencers competed at Direct Elimination (DE) to 15 touches (winners advanced forward). First DE Allen received a ‘Bye’ due to great results at pool session. Second Defence Skinner Graham, New England. Allen won 15:9 won most points from fast attacks. Third DE A. Trudnos fence Pan Jerry, Canadian fencer with much higher experience on national level. After exiting the bout, Allen lost 12:15.

Allen Trudnos received 42 USA National Points ratings and is ranked eigth at Youth 14 Men’s Saber in New Jersey. He also automatically qualified to compete at the 2018 USA Fencing Summer National Championships. Tournaments will be held from June 28 to July 7, in St. Louis, MO. The 10-day Championships event will bring more than 4,000 fencers from USA and Canada.
