SCCC panel to probe impact of media on free speech

NEWTON--What constitutes free speech these days? Is there really free speech? And what is the role of the media in this regard? All these questions and others related will be the focus of a special event being hosted by Sussex County Community College at the First United Methodist Church's Sanctuary, 111 Ryerson Avenue, Newton, on Friday night Oct. 19.

"The Impact of Media on Our Society's Free Speech" will start at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Censorship in the 21st century has become more sophisticated and in some cases hard to detect. Burning books at Fahrenheit 451 is no longer necessary.

The format will feature four panelists, with time for Q&A's afterwards. The panel includes SCCC History Professor Josh Moser, SCCC student David Bryson, Attorney and Professor Judy Sullivan, and retired Police Lieutenant Robert Kalosy. SCCC Professor Nancy Gallo, J.D., will be the emcee and moderator for the event.

Professor Moser will speak to The Presidency vs The Press. "Guaranteed by the 1st Amendment, the Freedom of the Press has become a hot button topic in today's society, but how was it viewed by earlier presidents?" asks Moser. "We'll look at the administrations of Presidents Washington, Adams and Jefferson show that there was a startling love/hate relationship that continues to this day."

The panel will also offer views on whether dissent serves the democratic process in a time of radical factionalism and tribal identity politics, are unpopular views being censored and de-platformed, and can free speech survive on a college campus.
