NEWTON--The October meeting of the Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table will feature a presention on “How the U.S. Navy Won the Civil War” by Chuck Veit.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Bristol Glen facility, 200 Bristol Glen Drive, Newton, N.J. in the Town Hall room. Admission is free.

Received wisdom tells us that the Navy played a minor role during the Civil War ccasionally spectacular, but ultimately moot. Using period data and quotes, this talk questions those assumptions, and demonstrates how devastatingly effective were the contributions of “Lincoln’s webbed feet.” The blockade, the many tactical and major strategic battles fought by the fleet, and the fact that the Union conquests were maintained from the gunboats all point to a very different conclusion at odds with what we believe we know.

Chuck Veit is author of a growing number of original research books dealing with the Civil War and Navy history. He is a frequent speaker on 19th century naval topics at area historical societies and Civil War round tables, as well as at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Chuck is president of the Navy and Marine Living History Association, an organization dedicated to sharing America’s naval history with the modern public through the medium of in-the-field events, where he speaks with several thousand visitors annually.

The Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table provides educational programs, tours, and fellowship for individuals interested in the Civil War Era. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information please call Jennifer at 973-948-4724 during the day, or check out the Round Table’s website at www.ryersoncwrt.com
