AUGUSTA — Come out and show your true colors and help fight cancer by participating in the third annual “All Cancers Suck” 5K Color Run/Walk.
Sponsored by Main Street Events, Inc., Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, iHeart Media and Regional Cancer Care Associates, the event will be held on Saturday, August 18 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Proceeds will go to benefit Regional Cancer Care Charities located in Sparta.
“We are thrilled to present a memorable experience for folks of all ages and fitness levels in the Tri State area,” said race director Andy Ball. “Teams and individuals will have the opportunity to run through seven color stations throughout a double loop, flat 5K course—each color associated with the wide variety of cancers noting that all cancers need attention and research funding. A color free zone is available as well.”
"I love volunteering for the All Cancer Sucks Color Run every year,” said Renee Harman, who works at the Little Hill Foundation in Hardwick “It’s such a fun group of people raising money for a great cause. It is a unique race with plenty of color and water stops. Participating local businesses make it a wonderful community event. Main Street Events organizes a premier race.”
For those running, the event will be chip-timed with posted results to follow with the help of Tri State Timing. Chip timing precisely measure individual race results by registering the runner's race chip as he or she moves across radio frequency idenitification (RFID) timing mats located throughout the race course. The individual clock starts as soon as the runner passes over the mats located at the starting line, and likewise ends as the runner crosses the mats at the finish line.
The top three male and female runners will receive colorful, artistic blown-glass trophies unique to this event.
“The event was inspired in February of 2016 after Melissa Eaton of Sparta lost her aunt, Karen Gormley, to lung cancer,” Ball said. “The organization’s mission is to help people cope with loss, manage their emotional wellness, and show love for their family members and friends who are still fighting or who have lost their battle with cancer.”
The All Cancers Suck 5K Color Run/Walk will offer lots of fun for participants. Each runner/walker will enjoy a finisher photo, drone footage to follow, free food, live music with Whiskey Crossing and on-course music throughout the race. There will also be the Sussex Stags Semi Pro Football Dance Team, Alpha Fitness warmup and post event dance, Massage Envy, Children’s Home Spun Merry-Go-Round, Culligan Water misting, water and cleanup stations.
The Color Run is staged in a expanded area with continued response for a larger festive atmosphere with convenient parking, with Friday, August 17 pre-race packet pick-up from 5-7 p.m You can also pick up pre-registration packets the day of the race and register prior to the start on Aug. 18. Great t-shirts, goodie bags and sunglasses will be offered while suppplies last.
“The event provides a great opportunity for dedicated sponsors, volunteers and individuals to make a meaningful appearance in the community and support an important cause,” Ball said. “Your involvement in the All Cancers Suck 5K Color Run/Walk will support the race participants and their families as they battle living with cancer or managing the loss of loved ones.”
