What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?

Gingivitis and periodontitis are two types of periodontal disease.

Gingivitis is reversible tissue damage confined to the gums. No recession or bone loss occurs. With good home care and on-time maintenance visits to the dentist, gingivitis can be prevented.

Periodontitis is irreversible tissue damage, where bone loss and recession occurs. Damage occurs to the periodontal ligament as well. The periodontal ligament are fibers that attach to your teeth and the surrounding bone to help hold it in place. Some of these are destroyed in the process.

Therefore, it's essential to maintain good self care, as well as regularly seeing your dentist and getting a professional cleaning to avoid having any of these periodontal diseases!
