— Barbara Jones was a creative force in the promotion of Arts Education for children and people of all ages. She was a Founding Trustee of the Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council (SCA&HC), the founder of the Sussex County Teen Arts Festival in 1969 and the founder of The SCA&HC Senior Student Arts Award Ceremony.

“I was fortunate to have been there in 1976 at the first award ceremony held in the Sparta home of the renowned sculptor, Jock Manton”, said Stella Trikouros Assistant Professor of Theatre/Communications at Sussex County Community College. “I was teaching and directing the play productions at Newton H.S. while being mentored in Teen Arts by this dedicated and talented art teacher, Barbara Jones.”

After Barbara retired, Stella continued the tradition with the Arts Council, as Teen Arts coordinator. For the last several years, Maureen Hanifan, a member of both the SCA&HC Board of Trustees and Teen Arts Advisory Board, has continued this great tradition. This awards Ceremony takes place at the Performing Arts Center at SCCC. The ceremony includes a sampling of student performances selected from the Teen Arts Festival, an Arts in Education Recognition Award to an outstanding adult member of the community who has supported arts education, a Peters Valley Summer Workshop Scholarship, a SCA&HC $200 Scholarship and the Barbara & Ben Jones’ Teen Arts $500 Scholarship.

Barbara initiated this scholarship that includes the name of her husband, Ben, who became a wood sculptor later in life. Barbara believed that the arts are a part of our entire lives. She continued to teach and to win awards for her visual art pieces into her late nineties.

Barbara and Ben’s children have continued this scholarship in the memory of their exceptional parents. They support this $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from a Sussex County high school. Applicants must have participated in the 2018 Teen Arts Festival, must plan to attend college to major in an art field of study or major in education in one of the art fields.

Contact Stella Trikouros at Sussex County Community College to receive an email copy of the application at strikouros@sussex.edu.

The deadline to submit this application is 11:59 p.m. May 1, 2018. The winning applicant is required to attend the Awards Ceremony to receive the scholarship money or it will be awarded to a runner up. The ceremony will take place 7:30 p.m. on May 9 at the Performing Arts Center at SCCC. This event is free and open to the public.
