What is osteonecrosis of the jaw?

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is the weakening or breakdown of your jawbone. Surprisingly, this can be caused by "anti-resorptive" agents that are supposed to help build up bone and prevent osteoporosis. Although this may happen, the risk of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw is very low. Osteonecrosis could also be caused by untreated dental disease and the bacerial pathogens in your mouth. This can eventually cause damage to soft tissues and eventually damage the bone.

Some symptoms of osteonecrosis are:

• exposed bone

• numbness or a heavy feeling of the jaw

• loose teeth

• recently treated gums that are not healing

Contact your dentist or general doctor if you feel you've developed any of these symptoms after a dental treatment!
