BYRAM — The eighth grade students in Mrs. Naimo’s art class at the Byram Intermediate School recently learned about the history of shoes and how art plays an important role in today’s shoe design. Students learned about the early history of shoes and how they developed from ancient shoe designs. Some little known facts came to light. Did you know that the average woman owns at least 30 pairs of shoes, and she spends an average of $300 on footware every year? Students then were asked to design their own shoe from clay. Some decided to take a serious approach to their designs and others decided to take a more creative approach and incorporate unusual elements into their shoes. Once the shoes were formed they were fired and painted using glazes. This is one of the student’s favorite activities in art class and they take great pride in the shoes they created.
