What is fluoride and how does it protect teeth?

Fluoride is found naturally in water sources such as lakes, rivers, oceans, etc. It may also be found in certain food or beverages, but the levels vary. Fluoride helps make the enamel stronger, thus more resistant to decays. It is added on to toothpaste and other dental products as well. Almost 75% of the US population have fluoridated community water systems (the addition of fluoride to drinking water) to increase the natural fluoride level up to the recommended standards to prevent cavities.
