Katherine Ann Chorun (née Toarello) passed from this life to the next peacefully in her home on October 8, 2017 in Byram township, New Jersey at the age of 81 after some brief months of suffering with pancreatic cancer. She closely followed her first child, daughter Therese, age 55, who preceded her in death less than one month earlier on September 12.

Katherine is survived by her faithful husband of 56 years Joseph; children Leslie Chorun of Kansas City, KS, Philip Chorun of Whitehouse Station, NJ, and Alan Chorun of Byram, NJ; granddaughters Alexandra, Elena and Julia, and sister Alice Weyenberg of Manitowoc, WI. She is preceded in death by sisters Margaret Diorio, Elizabeth (Betty) Sciortino, brother James Toarello and infant sister, Lucille.

Katherine was born on December 4, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY to Marie (Locke) and James Toarello. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a Bachelors degree. She studied ballet in NY for a time and traveled to Europe, developing an appreciation for classical art, music and dance, which interests she shared with her husband Joseph (Sei Yong Cho), whom she married at Corpus Christi Church, New York City in 1961. Four children followed, and she eventually settled down with her family in Byram, on a small but lovely lake, where she devoted her time to caring for her family. Later she worked as a preschool teacher, a poll worker for the county election office and an historic interpreter for Waterloo Village, a national historic site. She enjoyed bird-watching, hiking, tennis and ice skating. Sewing, embroidering and crocheting were regular activities and she was a hospital volunteer.

She very much enjoyed the beauty of nature, along with her husband, and they traveled together visiting many beautiful national parks, monuments and gardens throughout the United States and Canada, also passing on their appreciation of nature to their children. She was a paragon of thriftiness, in accordance with the counsel of the Lord, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” (John 6:12)

Katherine was a lifelong Catholic Christian and member of St. Michael Parish in Netcong, NJ. She sang in the choir for many years and also in the community with the Sunshine Singers, who sang for nursing home residents. She served as a catechist for the religious education program at St. Michael. She kept a weekly holy hour of prayer in the presence of Christ Jesus at the perpetual Eucharistic adoration chapel for over 20 years. She wished to say thank you to her friends in the choir and adoration chapel for their kindness, support and prayers.

A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Michael Church, 2 Church St., Netcong, NJ on Tuesday, October 17 at 11:00 A.M., followed by the Rite of Committal at nearby Stanhope Union Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Katherine's life.
