The Sussex Branch of LiteracyNJ (LNJ-SC) provides free tutoring for adults in English and related skills. This is done by volunteers whom we train for this rewarding mission.

We have a list of adults — both foreign-born and U.S.-born – who want to improve their English and are waiting to be matched with a tutor. We need to train additional tutors to meet the needs of these hopeful students.

We are providing training in a flexible form: a combination of three in-person classes and a series of on-line training units between those sessions. This permits you to accomplish a large part of the training at times that fit your schedule. The in-person classes are on Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 PM, September 27, October 11 and October 26. They are held at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton (54 High Street).

The first session, September 27, starts with an Orientation, which introduces you to the tutoring process and the responsibilities of a tutor. That helps you decide whether you want to be a tutor. After a break we get you started on the training.

You do not need previous experience as a tutor or as a teacher. You do not need to speak another language ; you might be matched with a student who speaks Spanish, French, Japanese, or Swahili—we teach you how to work with that student in English. (Or you might prefer working with an American who needs to improve their English; we have both categories of students).

There is no charge for this training, but a $45 donation is requested to cover the training materials.
