How might pregnancy affect my mouth?

It is important not to neglect your oral health while you are pregnant. Many women go through their pregnancy without any dental discomfort, but some oral conditions can worsen during that period.

Some oral conditions can even be created. Regular checkups are important to prevent any conditions from occurring.

Some oral conditions that may develop during pregnancy are:

1. Pregnancy gingivitis - Some women experience hormonal changes that can affect the mouth. For instance, women can develop "pregnancy gingivitis", where the gums swell and feel very tender. It may start to bleed a little while brushing or flossing as well. Your dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings to treat this.

2. Increased risk of tooth decay - During pregnancy, you may be prone to getting more cavities. If you are eating more carbohydrates than usual, this can contribute to tooth decay. Morning sickness also increases the amount of acid in your mouth, which can eat away at the enamel, or your teeth's outer covering.

3. Pregnancy tumors - some women can develop a raw-looking raspberry-like swelling between teeth that commonly occurs during the second trimester. It isn't cancer, but instead may be related to plaque. If you notice that you may have them, talk to your dentist about treating them and having them removed.
