What is plaque?

Plaque is a sticky film that clings to your teeth. It contains bacteria and can contribute to tooth decay and disease. Plaque that isn't removed from teeth through thorough brushing can harden and develop into calculus or tartar. When tartar builds above the gum line, your gum tissue can get inflamed and bleed easily. This is called gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease.

You can avoid plaque buildup by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and regularly visiting your dentist.
