What are space maintainers and why are they important?

Space maintainers are used as a "placeholder" if your child prematurely loses a baby tooth. A permanent tooth can erupt into that empty space where the baby tooth fell instead of erupting where it should be, and cause complications when more adult teeth are ready to pop up into the oral cavity. Space maintainers help to prevent this from happening!
