What is baby bottle tooth decay and is it preventable?

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay is often the term used to describe tooth decay in infants and toddlers. Although their teeth is temporary, it is still important to keep them as healthy as possible so they can chew their food, speak properly, and have a nice smile. This usually occurs in the upper front teeth, but can occur anywhere as well.

One common cause for this is prolonged exposure to sugar, such as when a baby is put to bed with a bottle, thus explaining the name Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. Bacteria in the oral cavity eat the sugars from the milk that is in the baby's mouth. They then produce acid byproducts, which can lead to tooth decay.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay can be preventable. Bed time and nap time bottles should be finished before putting your infant to bed. When your baby's teeth start to come in, brush them gently with a children's sized toothbrush, and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. Supervise them until they can be counted on to not swallow toothpaste. And of course, always encourage healthy eating habits.
