What causes bad breath?

There are a number of causes for bad breath, or halitosis. For example:

1. Dry mouth - Saliva is important because it washes your mouth. Without enough saliva, your mouth isn't being cleaned as it should be. Dry mouth can be caused by medications, salivary gland problems, or just by breathing through your mouth.

2. Food - there are a number of food that cause foul-smelling breath, such as onions, garlic, and coffee.

3. Bacteria - Your mouth hosts hundreds of different types of bacteria that naturally live there. The heat inside allows these bacteria to grow. When you eat, the bacteria feed on the food that remains in your mouth and leave smelly by-products behind.

4. Smoking and tobacco - smoking stains teeth and gives bad breath. Smoking may affect your sense of smell and thus smokers may not be aware of how their breath smells.

5. Gum disease - persistent bad breath may be a sign of advanced gum disease, which is caused by plaque.

6. Medical conditions - foul breath can be caused by other conditions, such as gastric reflux, diabetes, liver disease, or kidney disease. If this is the case, it is recommended that you see your healthcare provider.
