What is a sealant and what does it do?

A dental sealant is composed of a plastic material that is typically painted directly on the chewing surfaces of teeth (sealants are usually placed on the back teeth, where decay most often occurs) and hardens. It acts as a barrier and helps prevent cavities by sealing out plaque, food and acids from getting into the depressions and grooves of your teeth. Sealants can last several years before needing a reapplication. During your dental visit, your dentist will check the condition of your sealants and reapply them if necessary.
