What are my options if I want to whiten my teeth?

It is recommended that you first see your dentist because not all whiteners can correct all types of discoloration. For example, whitening will not work if you have crowns, veneers, fillings, or caps. Yellow teeth may bleach well, but brown teeth may not. After talking to your dentist and finding that you may be a candidate for teeth whitening, you may have 3 different options:

1. Whitening toothpaste. Mild abrasives in the toothpaste can help remove surface stains. Look for the ADA seal for whitening toothpastes that have special chemicals that increase effectiveness of stain removal.

2. In-office bleaching. Also known as "chairside bleaching". The dentist will apply a rubber shield or protective gel on your gums prior to bleaching your teeth. A special laser or light may be used to enhance the whitening effect. This process usually only takes one office visit.

3. At-home bleaching. This includes whitening strips that stick to your teeth, although the bleaching agent is not as effective as what may be offered by your dentist. Other types of at-home bleaching may involve peroxide-containing gels that are placed in a tray that fit on your teeth.
