The devastating effects of depression
On Monday evening, May 13, NAMI Sussex invites the public to attend a free screening of DEPRESSION: Out of the Shadows, a documentary film which accurately conveys how devastating and disabling major depressive disorder can be. The 90-minute film, directed by Larkin McPhee, originally aired on PBS in May of 2008 and won a Peabody Award that same year. A brief guided discussion will follow the showing of the film.
The event will be held at Bridgeway, 93 Stickles Pond Rd. in Newton from 7-9 p.m. Advance registration is not required. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.
“Anyone who has personally experienced major depression knows how difficult it can be to overcome,” says Jeri Doherty, who is a teacher and support group facilitator for NAMI Sussex. “Well-meaning relatives and friends don’t understand why you can’t just shake off your negative thoughts and feelings and move on with your life. After they see this film, they will finally understand.”
Although the personal narratives in the film are intense and gut-wrenching, Out of the Shadows ultimately provides hope that professional treatment works and people do recover from major depression.
